In its first three years on ESPN, Expedition Earth has contributed to a better understanding of the environment. The series followed a group of climbers seeking a remote peak that rises out of the rain forests of Venezuela, where deforestation is eradicating species at an alarming rate; In South America, a team of premier whitewater canoeists explored Chile's Bio Bio river, and her indigenous people who are threatened by the planned damming of these pristine waters; In East Africa, Expedition Earth sponsored a team of doctors from the Smithsonian Institute in a medical safari to gather skin and blood samples from Africa's felines: the lion, the leopard, and the cheetah. Expedition Earth will follow the ultimate dream of all: the first non-stop balloon flight around the world, which will conduct important experiments on the earth's atmosphere.
Expedition Earth is a publicly visible series which has generated widespread press coverage. Each one-hour special is broadcast four times, prime time, on ESPN, America's largest cable network, currently reaching 62 million households. The series is also being syndicated for world-wide distribution and is expected to reach an additional 50 million viewers.
